As a manager, one of the responsibilities you have is to create an environment that your team can perform their best. If your team is not maximizing their potential and not doing their best you have to ask yourself to what extent are you liable for this level of performance. You should ask yourself if you are enhancing a team building culture in your team and if you are helping your team members to reach their maximum potential.
Some of the steps that you can implement as a manager to enhance a high performing culture are listed below.
Decide with the team how you are going to build a high-performance culture
Involving the team in decision-making is one of the factors that enhance team building and make each member feel as part of the team. You can discuss with the team members what they expect from you on each day.
Provide clear expectations and priorities
The second step is to discuss what is expected from the team members so that they know what is expected of them each day. They also need to know their priorities in the team for teamwork. The team behavior can also be discussed at this stage and how it can be exhibited daily.
Help the team members gain a sense of ownership by sharing group goals.
Sharing the team`s goals makes each team member to own the goals and work towards them because they all know what is expected of them and what they are supposed to do in terms of productivity, production quotas, customer service, schedules, costs and many more. You can promote team building by allowing the team members help you track what is important in measurement of progress
Let the team members help in problem-solving.
This will help them not only grow in problem-solving skills but also in experience. If you deal with other departments you can encourage them to set up inter-departmental improvement groups to discuss how the departments can help each other
Let team members have input agendas
Keep lines of communication open
Team building requires communication between you and the team members. Involve them in making plans, results, challenges, and product development. Let customer feedback be known to them and also inform them on what the higher management strategies mean to them as a team. Communicate with the team the state of the business and the role they have to play.
Encourage team code of conduct
This is what will develop the ethos in working together. Team building is promoted by good working ethics. Let the members give you their idea of how a professional team looks like. You can give an example of a pit-stop team for the formula one cars working together and let them discuss what one can do to produce such amazing results. Let them also point out what they have learned from their team and what they can apply to the team.
